Potomac Nationals News Release
(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals seized the lead in the early innings, pitched out of jams in the middle frames, and poured on the offense late to roll to a 10-2 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash that moved them to within one victory of the Carolina League Championship.
With the Nationals leading 3-2 in the sixth, Jimmy Barthmaier faced a bases loaded, no-out jam. He retired the next three batters, kept the Dash off the scoreboard in the frame and watched the Nats' offense ride that momentum the rest of the way.
Potomac countered with three runs in the bottom half to essentially ice the game. Jamar Walton led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch by Charlis Burdie. He moved to third on Sean Rooney's sacrifice bunt and scored on Robbie Jacobsen's single to center. Chris Curran hit a ball to the right side that was misplayed by Seth Loman and allowed Jacobsen - who advanced to third on a Lozada walk and another wild pitch - to score. Francisco Soriano then hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-2.
The Nationals jumped to the lead in the first inning - which had been delayed nearly half an hour by rain - when Bill Rhinehart homered to right, and padded their margin when Lozada went deep in the second.
The Dash clawed back to tie the game with single runs in the third and the fourth; Kenny Williams singled in Drew Garcia in the third, but that inning could have been much worse. With the bases loaded and one out, Loman hit a line drive to Barthmaier that became a double play. Greg Paiml tied it in the fourth with an RBI single.
Potomac surged back in front in the fourth, when Sean Rooney tripled home Tyler Moore, who had been hit by a pitch for the second time.
Carlos Martinez pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Barthmaier, and watched the Nats pad their lead in the eighth. They loaded the bases with no outs, and unlike the Dash earlier in the evening, cashed in. Soriano doubled in a pair, and Rhinehart added to his big night with a two-bagger the opposite way.
A.J. Morris pitched a perfect ninth inning to end the affair and put Potomac a win away from their second league title in three years.
Friday night, Marcos Frias takes the ball for the Nats against Nate Jones for Winston-Salem. First pitch is set for 7:03, and the broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:30.
