Nashville SC News Release
MURFREESBORO - Nashville SC's quest to determine the best Tennessee FIFA 20 player kicked off on Sunday at Middle Tennessee State University in the Student Union Ballroom with the first of four qualifiers in the EA Sports FIFA 20 Challenge. Alejandro Tano took home the title and claimed a spot in the Invitational round next month in Nashville.
The Student Union Ballroom was filled with participants, supporters, and staff. The room featured two big screens and 16 PS4s for competitors. PS4s were set in tables in the center of the room next to one another and created an experience for others to look in on different games at one time.
"This is what I want to do. I want to be competing at an event like this," said Tano.
Sam Obenchain, the tournament director, noted that MTSU had the most registered participants compared to the other three schools: UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga and the University of Memphis. He noticed throughout the day that competitors remained quiet and collected.
Competitor Brandon Abell said, "The competition is good. Nobody has been too frustrated. The overall atmosphere is great, and the people are nice. Win or lose, it doesn't matter. It's all been friendly."
Several players walked away with new friends and players to compete against in the future. Players like Andrew Abell said he has been on a continuous search for tournaments and this was his first. He believes E-sports will continue to grow and hopes for future tournaments.
Tano fought through the losers' bracket to face off against Ronald Benegas in the final round, who went undefeated and gave Tano his only loss. Tano then defeated Benegas twice in the championship to claim $100 in FIFA points and top seed for the Invitational on November 3rd at Vanderbilt University. MTSU's eight Invitational qualifiers are Alejandro Tano, Ronald Benegas, Pablo Munez, Henry Baires, Jairo Del Campo, Juan Canizales, Andrew Abell, and Mauricio Gomez.
Obenchain is passionate about destigmatizing the e-sports realm and is thankful for the partnership with Nashville SC.
"There are a lot of fans of Nashville SC, and a lot of fans of FIFA and there is about to be another reason to be a fan of both. If you're a fan of FIFA, you're about to be a bigger fan of NSC," said Obenchain.
The next event in the FIFA 20 Challenge takes place next Sunday, October 13 on the campus of UT Knoxville.
