Nashville Native R.A. Dickey Signed By Brewers, Could Play For Sounds In 2007

NASHVILLE - Right-hander R.A. Dickey, a native of Nashville and 10-year veteran in professional baseball, has been signed to a minor-league contract by the Milwaukee Brewers and is likely to be a member of the 2007 Nashville Sounds team.

Dickey, who graduated from Nashville's Montgomery Bell Academy in 1993 and later starred at the University of Tennessee, has spent his entire pro career in the Texas Rangers organization after being the club's first round selection (18th overall pick) in the June 1996 draft.

The 32-year-old spent the majority of the 2006 season with the Triple-A Oklahoma RedHawks and posted a 9-8 record, one save, and a 4.92 ERA (72er/131.2ip) in 22 games (19 starts) in the Pacific Coast League. He opened the campaign with Texas and allowed a ML record-tying six home runs in a losing start on April 6 against Detroit before being reassigned to Oklahoma.

He has spent portions of his last four seasons in the majors with Texas while also making PCL appearances for Oklahoma during seven of his last eight campaigns. Dickey owns a 58-57 record and 4.48 ERA in 245 career minor-league outings (127 starts) and a 16-19 mark with a 5.72 ERA in his 77 Major League appearances (33 starts), all with the Rangers.

In addition to his many professional accolades, R.A. earned a bronze medal as a member of the United States baseball team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Dickey, who converted to a knuckleball pitcher during the 2006 season, will report to Brewers spring training in Maryvale, Ariz. as a member of the club's Triple-A roster.

Prior to departing for spring training, he is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association banquet on Friday, January 26 at the Millennium Maxwell House, 2025 MetroCenter Boulevard. A social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the banquet at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which are available for purchase at the Sounds' Greer Stadium offices, are $25.00 in advance and $35.00 at the door.
