Nash sets AFL record in Gladiators fourth straight win

Las Vegas, NV, May 16, 2004 – Las Vegas Gladiators' offensive specialist Marcus Nash caught 11 receptions for 117 yards and three touchdowns as Las Vegas won their fourth consecutive game with a 44-35 victory over the San Jose SaberCats at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. With his 11 receptions, Nash set a new single season Arena Football League record with 139 receptions.

Both teams combined for nine turnovers and 21 penalties in the Gladiators victory. The victory for Las Vegas evens their record at 7-7 and drops San Jose to 10-4.

The SaberCats opened the game by scoring the first 14 points, picking off Gladiators quarterback Clint Dolezel three times in the first half, including one that ADT Defensive Player of the Game Barry Wagner took 50 yards for a touchdown. The Gladiators scored on the final play of the second quarter to cut the San Jose lead to 21-12 at halftime.

The Gladiators lost kicker Brian Gowins in the second quarter, when he was tackled against the boards on a botched extra point. Las Vegas was forced to go for two the rest of the game, converting on 4 of 5 two point conversion attempts.

The Gladiators defense held their fourth straight opponent to less than forty points, picking off San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb three times, including two by Dennison Robinson.

Dolezel finished the game 28-of-47 passing for 289 yards with five touchdowns to go along with his three interceptions.

Grieb completed 17-of-26 passes for 192 yards with one touchdown in addition to his three interceptions.

The Gladiators go on the road to face Western Division rival Los Angeles Avengers on Saturday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. PT. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 920 in Las Vegas.

The Gladiators return home for their final regular season home game at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 30 against the Columbus Destroyers.
