Myrtle Beach Drops Saturday Night Contest to Augusta 6-4

A three-game winning streak was snapped as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell to the Augusta GreenJackets 6-4 on Saturday evening. Their second loss of the week dropped the Pelicans to a 63-32 overall record and 16-13 in the second half. The GreenJackets hold a 46-47 record and 10-17 in the second half of the season.

Josue Huma (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI) led the team with a pair of RBI from the leadoff spot. Jacob Wetzel (1-3, HR, RBI) hit his seventh home run of the month on a solo shot in the fourth inning. Kevin Alcantara (1-4, 2B, RBI) also brought in a run in the loss as the Pelicans went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded six.

In his first start with the Pelicans, Didier Vargas (0-1) took the loss with five runs, four earned through four innings. Vargas struck out six but allowed five hits and walked two. Frankie Scalzo was impressive in relief with three scoreless frames and five strikeouts.

Augusta turned five hits into six runs with Geraldo Quintero (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI) leading the team with a pair of runs driven in from the leadoff spot. Brandol Mezquita (1-3, RBI, BB), Adam Zebrowski (0-3, RBI, BB), and Connor Blair (1-3, RBI) all drove in runs to help the winning effort.

AJ Smith Shawver (3-4) earned the win with seven strikeouts through five innings with four earned runs. Ronaldo Alesandro pitched two shutout innings with four strikeouts to pick up his second save of the season.

For the second straight game, the Pelicans scored in the top of the first. With Parker Chavers on first, Alcantara lined a two-out single to left field to plate the game's first run. It was Alcantara's 70th RBI of the season.

The GreenJackets took their first lead with a two-run bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, Mezquita grounded a single into centerfield as both runs came in for a 2-1 Augusta lead.

Wetzel's two-out solo home run tied the game in the top of the fourth. His ninth home run of the season was hit on a 1-1 pitch and went over the right field wall.

Three runs came in with two outs for Augusta to grab the lead again in the bottom of the fourth. Blair hit an RBI single with Stephen Paolini on third to tie the game 2-2. After Eliezel Stevens hit a single to put two runners on, Quintero cleared the bases with a triple to right field as the GreenJackets took a 5-2 lead.

The Pelicans inched closer with a two-run fifth. Malcom Quintero and Alejandro Rivero singled with one out for Huma. On an 0-1 pitch, Huma hit a double to right field that scored both runs to cut the Augusta lead to 5-4. Alcantara struck out with runners on second and third to end the inning.

One insurance run came in for the GreenJackets in the bottom of the eighth. Angel Gonzalez walked two batters out of the bullpen and threw a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third. After Paolini's lineout, Zebrowski grounded out to short as a run came across to extend the GreenJackets' lead to 6-4.

The Pelicans went down in order in the top of the ninth inning.

With a 3-2 lead in the series, the Pelicans will head into Sunday's game with a chance to clinch the series victory with the GreenJackets. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
