Mustangs Dominating Weekend

The Southeast Texas Mustangs (3-1) completed a dominating weekend with a road win over the South Texas Showboats (4-1) 104-87.

The Mustangs came out hot and determined to pay back the Showboats, who defeated them just last Sunday 94-93 in a surprising result. Southeast Texas led by as many as 6 points 20 to 14 before the Showboats battled back from behind again against the Mustangs to tie the score at the end of the first quarter at 20 apiece. In the second quarter Southeast Texas went ahead again by as many as 5 points, but a South Texas late first half rally put them ahead at half-time 44-41.

The Mustangs came out determined in the 3rd quarter and finally got control of the game and led by 20 points heading into the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter the Mustangs had to fight off two Showboats runs that cut the score to 14 points twice, but unlike last Sunday's comeback by the Showboats the Mustangs would have nothing of that by stopping the Showboats challenge and extending the lead to coast to an important road win by 17 points.

Veteran Power Forward DeRon Rutledge paced the SETX Mustangs effort with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Tim Pledger had a 21 point - 9 assist effort and continued his banner play at point guard for the Mustangs! Anthony "Lump" Lumpkin and rookie Currye Todd followed up with 16 and 12 points respectively.

"We knew coming into the game that we were going to have to bring great energy and effort to beat a good young Showboats team! We did just that and got a good road victory for our team." stated Rutledge.

South Texas came into the game undefeated and ranked #3 in the nation in the ABA Power Rankings. Southeast Texas was ranked #10 in last week's ABA Power Rankings and are surely to move up after dominating performances over the weekend against the Showboats and the Houston Takers!
