Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (March 29, 2012) "" The Milwaukee Mustangs (2-1) took control early and carried a second straight outstanding defensive performance from linebacker Marcus Everett to a 63-40 victory over the division- rival Pittsburgh Power (1-2) on Thursday evening.
A week after being named the Arena Football League's JLS Ironman of the Week for his contributions against New Orleans, the veteran playmaker Everett was at the top of his game once again versus the Power, intercepting two passes, recovering a fumble, and falling on two onside kicks. Two of his turnovers led to first quarter Milwaukee touchdowns, while his third-quarter interception return for a touchdown helped solidify a Mustangs win. "I'm going to keep working hard every week, studying film, and making plays," said the National Guard MVP of the Game.
After a Pittsburgh field goal started the scoring, Milwaukee wasted no time taking the lead, as Gino Guidugli hooked up with Jonathan Wilson on a 27-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage to go up 7-3. The Mustangs would then benefit from two first quarter Power turnovers to take a commanding 20-3 lead. First, Everett intercepted a Bill Stull pass to set up a 12-yard touchdown pass from Guidugli to Jared Jenkins. Then Everett stepped up once again with a fumble recovery that led to a Guidugli quarterback sneak to end the first quarter scoring.
A Power drive led by bulldozing running back Tyre Young ended with a one-yard Young lunge into the end zone to cut the deficit to 20-10 early in the second quarter. After Ryan Gates tacked on a field goal for Milwaukee, Pittsburgh would answer back with another touchdown, as Stull connected with Lonnell Dewalt to trim the lead to six. But another Guidugli sneak would give the Mustangs an imposing 30-17 halftime lead.
Milwaukee opened the second half with a bang, scoring on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Guidugli to fullback Nick Torresso to take a 37-17 lead. With 1:41 remaining in the third quarter, Everett would strike again with a pick- six deep in Power territory and the Mustangs were rolling with a 44-17 lead.
Young would give the Power life to begin the final quarter with another short rushing touchdown, but Milwaukee would answer right back with Guidugli's third rushing touchdown of the game to take a 50-24 lead with 7:40 remaining in the contest. After a P.J. Berry receiving touchdown, the Mustangs roared back with another touchdown reception by Jenkins for a 57-32 advantage. The Power would score on a Dewalt touchdown reception late, but Milwaukee closed out its first home matchup of 2012 in strong fashion with a 63-40 victory.
Head Coach Bob Landsee summed up his team's outstanding performance after the game, "We did a great job defensively. The only thing the defense has to do is learn how to finish. Overall, the defense from week one to week two to week three has gotten better. No one was giving the defense a lot of credit when we started this whole thing, but we've got a good defense. If you keep people 40 points and under, you'd better win every game."
