Cedar Rapids Rampage News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA-Often times in sports, when something seems like it has become a certainty, the script can flip in a hurry. Just when it was looking like they would never lose again, the Cedar Rapids Rampage saw a 3-0 lead and a seven game winning streak disappear with a resounding thud in their 7-5 loss to the Chicago Mustangs at the US Cellular Center Friday night. The Rampage fell to 0-6 all-time against Chicago, including 0-3 this year.
Cedar Rapids dominated the first quarter. Two goals by Tony Walls sandwiched around an Angel Curiel goal gave the Rampage a commanding 3-0 lead, seemingly picking up where they left off in last Saturday's 13-2 thrashing of Florida. Chicago's Miguel Vaca scored his first of four goals on the night at 7:19 of the second quarter to end the Rampage's shutout streak at 62:20, and cut the lead to 3-1.
Ephraim Beard scored a little under two minutes later and the Mustangs were back to within a goal. Gordy Gurson scored late in the quarter to give Cedar Rapids a 4-2 lead and extend his point scoring streak to 27 games.
Vaca scored early in the third quarter and Taylor Bond scored late to tie the game at 4-4. At 1:38 of the fourth quarter Vaca scored again to give the Mustangs their first lead. Curiel scored a power play goal at 5:49 to tie it again, but 78 second later it was Vaca scoring the game-winning goal, putting the Mustangs up 6-5.
The Rampage had a chance to tie when they went on a power play with 6:04 remaining, but could not convert. Just after the penalty expired Hewerton Moreira made a tight pass to Jonatan Santos who couldn't corral it and Luis Ortega and Francisco Gonzalez were off to the races for a breakaway goal at 11:04 to make it 7-5, closing out the scoring.
The Rampage will visit the Tacoma Stars in Kent, WA on Jaunary 13 and then return home for a double header weekend, January 20-21, against the defending Newman Cup champion Baltimore Blast and the Syracuse Silver Knights. Tickets are on sale starting at just $9 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or the U.S. Cellular Center box office.
