
Musketeers Hold off Storm

SIOUX CITY, Ia. - The Sioux City Musketeers (18-27-11) scored five goals in the second period to take the lead and held off the Tri-City Storm (21-27-7) in the third period, winning by a final score of 7-4 at on Tuesday night at the Tyson Events Center.
Storm forward Ben Foster had a goal and two assists in the loss, while Jason Cotton scored his first career USHL goal and Brian Ward had a goal and an assist.
The Storm took the lead right out of the gate when Cotton found the back of the net for the first time this season just 1:54 into the game. The Parker, Tex. native found room in the offensive zone and fired a wrist shot past Musketeer goaltender Kyle Hayton to make it 1-0 Storm.
Tri-City expanded on their early lead, taking advantage of their first power play opportunity. Forward Joel L'Esperance deflected a shot by Nolan Gluchowski into the back of the net and doubled the lead to 2-0.
A goal by Jake Guentzel of Sioux City at 14:43 made it 2-1 after one period of play.
The second period began well for Tri-City as Brian Ward scored his twenty-second goal of the season from Grant Opperman and Foster at 8:27 to make it 3-1 Storm.
Then things took a turn for the worse and Sioux City scored four straight in just over seven minutes to take a 5-3 lead.
Foster scored a power play goal on a deflection of a shot by Trevor Moore to make it 5-4 with just under a minute to play in the second, giving the Storm new life.
But Jake Montgomery retaliated with a Sioux City goal with just seven seconds remaining in the middle frame to extend the Musketeer lead to 6-4.
The Storm worked hard and controlled play for the first half of the third period but couldn't get anything to show for their efforts.
The Musketeers got the final tally of the game at 14:13 from Nikolas Olsson to make it 7-4.
Tanner Creel got the start in net for the Storm and made 27 saves on 34 shots in the loss.
Tri-City will now head to Sioux Falls to take on the Stampede on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Storm return to Kearney on Friday for a matchup with the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:30 p.m.
Notes: The Storm scratched forward Ryan McMurphy and Garrett Gamez, along with defenseman Richard Buri and goaltender Johan Mattsson.
