USHL United States Hockey League

Muskegon Lumberjacks Sign Alex Gaffney to Tender

April 17, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release

The Muskegon Lumberjacks announced the signing of forward Alex Gaffney to a tender agreement for the 2018-19 season. Gaffney is a native of West Orange, NJ and is committed to play college hockey at Harvard University.

Now in its seventh year, the USHL tender process allows teams to sign up to two 2002 birth year players prior to the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft, which takes place on May 7.

"Gaffney is an explosive player," said Muskegon General Manager John Vanbiesbrouck. "He has great vision and outstanding speed."

Gaffney, 15, is a 5-foot-8, 150-pound forward. Playing for the North Jersey Avalanche U16 team this season, Gaffney scored 39 goals and added 31 assists in 47 games. Gaffney's contributions helped the Avalanche win both the T1EHL and AYHL championships.

Gaffney is the first tender signing for Muskegon this season. The signing of Gaffney will replace the Lumberjacks' first round draft choice in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft.

If Muskegon tenders a second player, that signing would take the place of a second-round selection in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft. The final day for USHL teams to sign a tender is Sunday, May 6, 2018. Each tendered player will be on their respective team's roster the next season and play at least 55% of the team's regular season games.

Gaffney becomes the fourth player signed to a tender for the 2018-19 season, joining Ruben Rafkin (Tri-City Storm), Chase Bradley (Omaha Lancers) and Colby Ambrosio (Tri-City Storm).

Gaffney is the fifth player to be tendered by Muskegon since the start of the USHL tender process, joining Chaz Switzer (2013), Mitch Eliot (2014), Graham Lillibridge (2015) and Andrei Svechnikov (2016), who topped Monday's NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings among North American skaters.
