Batavia Muckdogs News Release

MORGANTOWN, WV- It was another low-scoring affair for the Muckdogs last night, but this time around Batavia came out on top 1-0. It was the first shutout win of the season for Batavia. The Muckdogs held the Black Bears to just three hits through the whole game, a season-best for the Muckdogs pitching staff.

The game's lone run came in the fifth inning. Jerar Encarnacion sent a line drive up the middle for a leadoff single to extend his hit streak to nine straight games, and help boost his average to a .309 clip. An errant pickoff throw advanced him to third, and set up Denis Karas for a ground ball single to bring Encarnacion in to score and give Batavia the 1-0 lead.

Chris Vallimont had a much-needed strong outing. He went three innings only giving up two hits and striking out a season-high four batters.

Manuel Rodriguez came on in relief to shut down the Black Bears for the following four innings. He only gave up one single in his time on the mound. Through his scoreless four innings, he extended a streak to 34.2 innings without giving up an earned run, a streak that dates back to June 19th. Rodriguez now has an ERA of 0.48.

Batavia has now won six of their last eight games, and have a home-and-home series against the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn holds the league's wild card spot, putting a little more meaning into the series with the Doubledays. Batavia finds themselves five games back of that final playoff spot with just under a month to play. The first game will be played in Auburn for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch, followed by a pair of games at Dwyer Stadium on Thursday and Friday. Both of those games start at 705 p.m.
