Batavia Muckdogs News Release
Today's Game- Batavia looks to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, as they play the middle game of the three game set against State College. Batavia has their first off day upon returning back to Dwyer Stadium.
That was yesterday- The Muckdogs continued their trend of big scoring. After falling down 4-1 in after the fifth, Batavia answered with a four spot of their own in the top of the sixth. Denis Karas cleared the bases with a three-run double. In the seventh, Sean Reynolds belted his second home run of the season to put Batavia in front 8-4 after seven. A close rally in the ninth was shut down by Doug Domnarski, who picked up his first save of the season.
Offense Overload- In seven of the last eight games, Batavia has managed to score at least six runs in each of those contests. Batavia has one of the top scorers in the league, with Jerar Encarnacion sitting in first place with eleven runs scored.
Exploding Encarnacion- Jerar Encarnacion has been on a tear to start of the season. On his current nine game hit streak to open the year, he's hitting .500. He leads the league in hits (20), RBI (10), he's second in extra base hits (6) and sits atop the league with his .500 average. He also has the most defensive assists by any outfielder in the league with three, all coming on June 19th against West Virginia.
Beginning from behind- The Muckdogs have had trouble with giving up early leads in ballgames. Batavia has trailed after the fifth inning on seven different occasions so far this season, and have gone 2-5 in those contests.
Same Skipper- Calling the shots this season will be second year manager Mike Jacobs. Jacobs spent seven years in the bigs with Mets, Marlins, Royals, and the Diamondbacks. He clubbed 100 HR's in his MLB career, 32 of which came in 2008 with the Florida Marlins. He also tacked on 93 RBI's that year. His first year as a manager in Batavia saw the team go 30-45.
Some Superlatives- This year's players come in all shapes and sizes. The tallest being Sean Reynolds who towers at 6'7". The shortest five check in at 5'11". The youngest Muckdog is Dakota Bennett who is currently 18, and the oldest on the roster is Logan Boyd who is 24.
Spikes sticking around- Batavia will have three more series against the Spikes after this one in State College. The next meeting occurs July 7-9 back at Dwyer Stadium.
Recent Roster Action- RHP Osman Gutierrez was released, OF Ricardo Cespedes was called up to Greensboro, and RHP Jameson McGrane was assigned to Batavia
Marlins Update- The Marlins topped the Rockies by a score of 8-5 on Sunday thanks to a third straight game that Derek Dietrich would homer in. He also set a career high with four hits in the ballgame, one of which was a double, and he drove in two runs.
