Batavia Muckdogs News Release
AUBURN, NY - A masterful start for Humberto Mejia was not enough to get Batavia the win over the Auburn Doubledays in the second day of a four-games in three-day series. Auburn took the 4-2 on the back of a three-run homer from Israel Pineda.
Humberto Mejia had produced another excellent start for the Muckdogs, going a season-high six innings, and through the first five and two-thirds, only allowing two baserunners. That start follows up an outing that saw Mejia strike out nine batters. He gave up a double in the top of the fourth to Carson Shaddy, which was Auburn's first hit of the game. In the sixth though, two runners reached base, and set up the only mistake on Mejia's final line. Pineda hit a no-doubter over the left field wall to set the Doubledays up 3-0.
Another run came to score in the seventh following a defensive lapse on Batavia's end. Jamori Blash was on first after a leadoff single. Nick Perkins hit a line drive single to right on a hit-and-run, and Blash never stopped running. He went through a stop sign at third base from Auburn manager Jared Head. Ricardo Cespedes got the ball back into the infield, but nobody saw Blash rounding third, and the throw was too late to tag him making it 4-0.
The Muckdogs wouldn't find an answer until the final frame. In the top of the ninth, Cespedes led the inning off with his third single of the game on a beautiful bunt on the right side of the infield. Sean Reynolds proceeded to draw a walk that pushed Cespedes to second. After a Denis Karas flyout to right field, Cespedes advanced to third and later scored on a Michael Donadio groundout. Sean Reynolds also made his way to home later in the inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
However, that is all that Batavia would muster in the game, and the 4-2 would end up as the final. The final game of the series is a 2:00 first pitch from Falcon Park, which will also be the final game the Muckdogs play there this season. The Doubledays will come to Dwyer Stadium one more time to close out the season on September 1st-3rd.
