CT Tigers Swept by Aberdeen IronBirds
August 19, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Jose Vasquez lowered his team-best earned run average to 1.81 after pitching six innings with one earned run allowed on Sunday afternoon but the Connecticut Tigers (25-32) lost both games of a doubleheader and suffered a three-game weekend sweep by the Aberdeen IronBirds (28-31) at Dodd Stadium.
Vasquez (Loss, 5-2) started Game 2 of the doubleheader and gave up a second-inning grand slam to Aberdeen catcher Bryndan Arredondo. All four runs were unearned following a one-out fielding error by Connecticut at second base. The 22-year-old righty from Venezuela allowed one earned run on a Jaylen Ferguson sacrifice fly RBI in the fourth inning that pushed Aberdeen's lead to 5-0. Vasquez exited after the sixth inning with five hits, two walks, and no strikeouts but dropped his ERA to second-lowest in the New York-Penn League, trailing only Brooklyn's Jaison Vilera.
Connecticut scored four unanswered runs in Game 2. IronBirds starter and Waterford, Connecticut native Willie Rios (Win, 3-3) tossed a wild pitch that scored 2018 second-round draft pick Parker Meadows for his first run with the CT Tigers. Alexis Garcia followed with an RBI single to left field that scored Ryan Karstetter and Moises Nunez added an RBI double to trim Aberdeen's lead to 5-3.
The Tigers scored once more in the seventh and final inning on a two-out RBI double to center field by Eric De La Rosa but he moved no further as IronBirds closer Ryan Conroy (Save, 6) ended the game with a strikeout. Following the series sweep by Aberdeen, the Tigers fell seven games behind the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats in the Stedler Division with 16 games left to play.
Game 1 served as the resumption of a game stopped in a scoreless tie during the third inning at Aberdeen on July 22. Aberdeen scored once on a two-out, RBI double by IronBirds right fielder Robert Neustrom in the fourth inning. Connecticut lefty Kacey Murphy (Loss, 0-2) allowed the only earned run in a 1-0 loss as the Tigers settled for three hits in the seven-inning game. Gray Fenter (Win, 4-3) earned the complete-game victory 29 days after he originally started the contest.
On Monday, the Tigers open a three-game home series against the Hudson Valley Renegades at Dodd Stadium on Kids Eat Free Night courtesy of U.S. Foods and Connecticut Family Magazine. Each child's ticket holder (12 years old and younger) will receive a voucher redeemable for a hot dog, bag of chips, and bottle of water.
