Batavia Muckdogs News Release

The Batavia Muckdogs fell 4-3 to their Pinckney Division rival Auburn Doubledays Tuesday night in their opener at Dwyer Stadium. The Doubledays had a four run lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning before Batavia scratched across two runs. Casey McKenzie started for Auburn but Josh Sowers picked up the win in relief. Batavia's Edgar Garcia falls to 0-1 on the young season.

The 18-year-old Garcia started on the mound for the Muckdogs, breezing through the top of the first without incident. The second inning is where Garcia ran into trouble. With one out, Chris Looze's single was followed by a two-run homer to right off the bat of Matt Lane.

The Muckdogs managed to cut the lead to one in the fourth when Tim Kennelly's sacrifice fly scored Charlie Yarbrough. The Doubledays answered back with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to gain the 4-1 advantage.

In the eighth, Yarbrough led off with a single. With two outs and Yarbrough still on first, Cody Montgomery hit a rocket past first and down the rightfield line for a double. Back to back errors by the Doubledays allowed both runners to score before Scott Byrnes got Quintin Berry to ground out.

The Muckdogs failed to even put the ball in play during the ninth as Edward Rodriquez faced only four batters, striking out three and walking one. He was credited with his first save.

Garcia took the loss after being knocked out with two outs in the sixth, charged with 4 runs, 3 earned on 7 hits, striking out 2 without walking a batter. Reymond Cruz (2.1 IP) and Bill Kirk (1.0 IP) combined to pitch a hitless remainder of the game.

The Muckdogs and Doubledays will play game two of the three game set Wednesday night, this time in Auburn's Falcon Stadium. They will return to Batavia for Thursday's finale.
