Batavia Muckdogs News Release

BATAVIA, NY - The Muckdogs dropped their fourth straight game to the Lowell Spinners on Monday night by a 4-3 score. A game that was locked into the ninth saw the difference maker cross the plate in that inning.

The Muckdogs saw Humberto Mejia's best start of the season on Monday. He went five innings while only allowing three hits and one unearned run. Mejia only walked one batter and struck out a season-high six batters.

The Muckdogs got on the board in the second inning when JD Osborne led off the frame with a double. After one out, Orchard Park native Bubba Hollins drove him in with a single to give Batavia the 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Gunnar Schubert hit his fifth double of the season, but Batavia could not move him around.

However, in the fourth, Batavia would come back with a bang. Osborne jacked a ball over the left-center wall for his homer of the season. In doing so, Osborne put Batavia up 2-0.

That would be as long as the Muckdogs' lead would last. Lowell scored one run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. A two-out rally in the fifth started things up for the Spinners. A single from Grant Williams was followed up by a dropped-third strikeout that sent Alan Marrero to first on the passed ball. Korby Batesole then drove in Williams to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

In the sixth, the Spinners did not wait as long. The first three batters got on base to start the inning. Only one scored, partially due to a 9-5 putout to get Cole Brannen at third base on a cannon of a throw to third from Jerar Encarnacion. Still, a single from Tyler Dearden tied the game at two after six innings.

The seventh inning contained another two-out rally for the Spinners. A walk to Jaren Duran set up the 2017 Red Sox' second round pick Cole Brannen to smack a double to put two runners in scoring position. Devlin Granberg was able to come up with his second single of the day that put Lowell in front 3-2.

The game was tied once more in the eighth, when Sean Reynolds crushed his league-leading fifth home run of the season over the right-center wall to tie the game at three.

Lowell was able to push the deciding run across the plate in the ninth. A leadoff walk to Alan Marrero started the rally. Dylan Hardy came on to pinch run for him, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Korby Batesole. After a groundout to short that put Hardy at third, Brannon came up and was able to beat out a close play at first after Gunnar Schubert slightly juggled the ball at shortstop. The go-ahead run scored on the play putting the Spinners back in front 4-3.

Batavia's efforts to tie came up short in the bottom of the ninth. Michael Donadio hit a two-out single up the middle to make it hits in eight of his last nine games, but that would be all the Muckdogs could come up with in the final frame.
