Minnesota Swarm News Release
SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced today that Minnesota Swarm General Manager Marty O'Neill has signed a two-year contract extension through the 2008 National Lacrosse League (NLL) season.
"Under Marty's leadership, our team is improved quickly," said Executive Vice President Matt Majka. "We look forward to building a winning tradition with the Minnesota Swarm."
O'Neill, 42 (6/6/64), made a number of off-season transactions prior to the 2006 NLL campaign that helped propel the Swarm into the playoffs in only its second NLL campaign. After a 5-11 inaugural season, Minnesota improved its record to 8-8 in 2006 and advanced to the East Division semifinals, before losing to the Buffalo Bandits 11-10.
He was named the Swarm's first-ever General Manager on September 14, 2004 and oversees all aspects of the lacrosse operations department including all matters relating to the club's player personnel, coaching staff and scouting. Prior to joining Minnesota, O'Neill served as General Manager of the Philadelphia Wings from 2001-2004. Prior to joining the Wings front office on June 12, 2001, he played eight seasons in the NLL as a goaltender and was recognized as one of the top goalies in box and indoor lacrosse. O'Neill spent five years with the Boston Blazers (1993-1997), one season with the Syracuse Smash (1998) and two years with the Buffalo Bandits (1999-2000). In 66 career NLL games, the Winnipeg, Manitoba-native posted a 13.27 goals against average (GAA), a .716 save percentage and 32 assists. O'Neill also played thirteen seasons for the Western Lacrosse Association's (WLA) Victoria Shamrocks, winning three Mann Cup's.
The former goaltender has served on the League's Competition Committee and was instrumental in assisting the NLL in developing new goaltending equipment guidelines that went into effect for the 2003-04 campaign. O'Neill also designs goalie equipment with his company Maximum Lacrosse.
Minnesota opens its third NLL season at Xcel Energy Center against the Chicago Shamrox on Saturday, January 13 at 7:00 PM. For more information on becoming a Minnesota Swarm season ticket holder please call (888) MN-SWARM.
