The New York expansion National Lacrosse League franchise has announced the signing of five more players to contracts. Club Head Coach and interim General Manager Adam Mueller announced today that Mike McLellan, Chris Passavia, Jeff Spano, Peter Vlahakis and Tom Zummo were each signed to one-year contracts. Passavia, Vlahakis and Zummo were all free agents and join New York looking for their first NLL action. Jeff Spano signs with New York after playing five seasons with the Philadelphia Wings and Mike McLellan joins New York after playing one season with the Arizona Sting. New York picked up Spano and McLellan in the Expansion Draft.
Chris Passavia joins New York after a standout collegiate career at the University of Maryland. The six-foot-one, 210 pound defenseman was a three time All-American in college, earning first team honors in 2004, second team honors in 2003, and third team honors in 2002. The Stony Brook, New York native was also named to the All-ACC team three times. His senior season in 2004, Passavia was one of 15 nominees for the Tewaarton Award, given to the nation's top player.
Peter Vlahakis, a face-off specialist, was a four-year starter at Fairfield University. He was ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA in face-offs, each of his four seasons with the Stags. The 24-year-old Shoreham, New York native was also a two-time All New England selection.
Tom Zummo was a three time First Team NCAA Division II All American at New York Institute of Technology. The Islip, New York native was also named the NYCAC Player of the Year as well as Division II Midfielder of the year his senior season in 2005. Zummo helped NYIT to a 2005 NCAA Division II National Championship scoring five goals and adding an assist in the championship game.
Jeff Spano brings five years of NLL experience to New York, all with the Philadelphia Wings. A defenseman for the Wings last season, Spano played in nine games, scored 13 points (three goals, ten assists) and collected 34 loose balls. In his career he has played 60 games and has scored 77 points on 20 goals and 57 assists and has collected 366 loose balls.
Mike McLellan heads to New York after playing just one game for the Arizona Sting last season. McLellan was the 14th overall selection in the 2005 Entry Draft by Edmonton, but was quickly traded to Arizona. He played college lacrosse at Mercyhurst College.
New York has now signed ten players to contracts in the past two days, having signed Roy Colsey, Brian Tower, Richard Brzeski, Bob Horsey and Armando Polanco yesterday.
As the team continues to sign players, New York also is preparing for the upcoming 2006 Entry Draft, which will held on September 13th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. New York currently owns the first overall pick in the draft.
