More Heartbreak for Wolves

Mohegan Wolves News Release


Uncasville, CT (May 10th, 2002)- For the second straight week the Mohegan Wolves have had the lead in the 4th quarter and failed to win. Mohegan led 35-33 with: 10 seconds remaining but were defeated by the Albany Conquest 41-35 before a crowd of 3,120 fans at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

As has been par for the course this season for the Wolves they started with a vengeance. Mohegan's defense stopped Albany on the first series but weren' t able to score deep in Conquest territory. A blocked Albany field goal resulted in only a field goal for the Wolves on the next series. Mohegan's newest addition, Ben LaBelle punched in a 4-yard touchdown run late in the 1st putting the Wolves on top 9-6 after one quarter.

Albany capitalized on Mohegan's mistakes to score twenty unanswered points in the 2nd before Cable Davis hooked up with Brandon Burnside from 13 yards out to make the score 26-15 at the half.

The 3rd was all Wolves as Davis and Brandon Burnside hooked up twice more, from 10 yards and 22 yards respectively, giving Mohegan the lead 29-26 going into the 4th quarter.

Albany answered with Corey Hill's 4th touchdown reception of the night to put the Conquest back on top 33-29. Davis would match that with another connection to Burnside putting the Wolves ahead with 6:00 minutes remaining. Game MVP Ryan Vena orchestrated a drive in only: 44 seconds culminating with a Vena 1 yard TD plunge. The Wolves last-ditch effort was denied giving Albany the victory, and the Wolves their 3rd straight loss.

Game MVP Ryan Vena led the Conquest. Vena passed for 167 yards and 4 touchdowns while rushing for another. Corey Hill again torched the Wolves. This time Hill had 10 receptions for 105 yards and 4 touchdowns. Lineman Alex Houston recorded 2 sacks to push his season total to 7.0 in 5 games.

Cable Davis passed for 236 yards and 4 touchdowns, all to Brandon Burnside. Burnside caught 12 passes for 163 yards to go with his 4 touchdowns. ADT Defensive Player of the Game Andy Macaione hauled in 7 passes for 41 yards. He also had 4 tackles and one pass broken up. Ben LaBelle was named Ironman of the game. He had 4 rushes for 17 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to go with 2 receptions for 14 yards in his first action with the Wolves. -cont'd- The loss drops the Wolves to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the division. Albany is 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the division.

Mohegan will host Rochester next Friday night. The Brigade defeated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 57-52 Friday night in Rochester. Mohegan defeated Rochester 54-45 on April 19th. It is the second of three match ups this season between the Wolves and the Brigade. Game time is set for 7:30 Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
