More Extra Innings! Blaze Squeeze Past Nuts, 3-2
Published on May 6, 2015 under California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
For the third time in four nights, the Bakersfield Blaze needed exactly one additional inning to decide a tightly contested ballgame, and for the second time in those three games, the Blaze came out on the right side of the ledger, beating Modesto 3-2 in ten frames on Wednesday night in Modesto.
Both starting pitchers were excellent, and neither factored into the final decision.
For the Nuts, Antonio Senzatela worked seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out a season-high 11 Blaze.
Bakersfield got their runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. In the 3rd, Aaron Barbosa singled with two outs, and Tim Lopes followed with a hopper into the corner for a run-scoring double. One frame later, Tyler O'Neill doubled, and later scored on Taylor Zeutenhorst's base hit to left field.
The Nuts got their runs early, and late. With Ryan Yarbrough on the hill, Modesto was able to come up with a pair of singles in the 2nd inning, and an errant pickoff throw plated their only run off the Blaze starting lefty. Yarbrough ended his night allowing one run over six innings.
In the 8th, Modesto got even off Trey Cochran-Gill (W, 2-1). A rarity for Trey, Modesto was able to get a run on a hit batter and a slicing flyball double.
Neither team scored in the 9th.
In the 10th, it was the Blaze to push in front. Luis Caballero struck out to begin the frame, but reached on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to second, and a flyball, to third, O'Neill came up with a huge line drive single to center, scoring Caballero, and giving the Blaze the 3-2 lead.
Nick Valenza (S, 1) worked an uneventful bottom of the frame for his first save.
Rayan Gonzalez (L, 1-2) took the defeat for the Nuts.
The win moves the Blaze back over the 500 mark at 14-13 and pulls the club even on the road trip at 3-3 with one game left in Modesto (before heading home on Friday).
The Thursday evening finale is set for a 7:05pm start, with a solid matchup of Konner Wade for the Nuts and Dan Altavilla for the Blaze.
Blaze fans can listen to every pitch live at BakersfieldBlaze.com or through the TuneIn Radio app. Dan Besbris has the call, with pregame show set to begin at 7:00pm.
