Morays have successful tryout

December 20, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Miami Morays News Release

The Miami Morays held their first ever open tryout camp this Saturday at the Miami Arena, and they didn't have to wait very long as 209 aspiring football players showed up.

Even half an hour before the doors opened at 8:00am, 65 players stood patiently in a line that would soon end up stretching around the block.

Local players, as well as several flying in from out of town, came in with the hopes that their efforts in a wide variety of drills would earn them the right to play professional indoor football. Players showed their skills in the 40-yard dash, 10-yard shuttle drill, bench press, vertical leap, standing long jump, box drills, and various skill and agility drills.

"Overall I am very happy with the amount of people who showed up and we were overwhelmed by the level of talent that we saw today. There were so many that we will need to see some players again and reevaluate their talent level so we can get a better feel of what we saw. But I was impressed with how many people wanted to be part of our team, and that should roll over into more interest and more competition." Head Coach Larry Little said.

Little was on hand through the entire seven and a half hours it took to give every player a look. In addition to the Morays coaching staff, former NFL players Leslie Shepherd and Terry Kirby were also actively involved in making the tryouts run smoothly and efficiently.

Drawing from the large pool of players at the skill positions, the tryouts concluded with the quarterbacks working out the numerous Cornerback and Wide Receivers in one-on-one and three-on-three drills. Convening at the end of the day, the Moray coaches got down to the difficult task of compiling information, evaluating players, and starting the process of deciding what players to sign to attend the February training camp.

"We knew we were going to get a good turnout today, since Miami has so much talent available for us to choose from, and we are really excited to see more players than we expected show up." Team owner Oronde Gadsden said. "The coaches today did an excellent job today in evaluating the talent, and we are all looking forward to bringing a championship to South Florida."

The Miami Morays will play in the National Indoor Football League, entering its fifth season with 28 teams located across the United States. The NIFL provides players with an opportunity to develop their skills and continue their careers in professional football.

Florida will be home to four new NIFL teams located in Lakeland, Kissimmee, Daytona Beach and Miami, providing natural geographical rivalries, as well as draw from the vast pool of football talent available in the state.

The Miami Morays kick off a 14 game schedule in March with seven home games at the Miami Arena. For additional information about the Miami Morays, please call Mark Fischel at 305-349-4466 or visit us at www.miamimoraysfootball.com.
