Montgomery Coaches Eye New Prospects

December 19, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release

Coaches got a good look at a number of new prospects for 2006 at open tryouts today held at Robert E. Lee High School. Assistant Head coach Mike Williams said that the number showing up was a little disappointing but "that gave a a chance to get a really good look at those who made it". The next open tryout for the Maulers is set for January 21, also to be held at Robert E. Lee High School. Williams said, "We'll be giving some of these guys a call to come back for another look." The athletes that the coaches were impressed with will be invited back to another tryout or invited into training camp in late February.

The NIFL season begins the middle of March and each team is allowed only 14 full practices before their first game. Assistant coach Carlos Clayton remarked, "The short training camp is the reason we try to impress upon these guys that they have to show up in good condition and ready to play ball." "We'll be in full pads and hitting by our third practice." he said.

The Maulers will be defending their 2005 division championship and expect nearly all of that team to be returning in 2006. "We've got a couple of players getting calls from the Arena League or the NFL." Williams said. "But most all of last year's team will be back in camp."

Season tickets are on sale for the new season at the Maulers office in Eastdale Mall. Information is available on line or by calling 334-277-1881.
