St. Louis Steamers News Release

(St. Louis, Feb. 12, 2004) -- Monterrey broke open a close game with three fourth-quarter goals and went on to defeat the St. Louis Steamers 6-3 in a special "School-Day" game that kicked off at 10:35 a.m. Thursday at The Family Arena.

Marco Coria scored two goals and MISL All-Stars Genomi Martinez and Marco Lopez each added a goal and an assist to pace the Monterrey offensive attack. Goalkeeper Hector Mireles made 11 saves to record the victory for the Fury (7-16).

Steamers forward Steve Butcher – also an MISL All-Star – had a goal and an assist to lead St. Louis. Sipho Sibiya and Daryl Doran chipped in the team's other two goals. With the loss, the Steamers fall to 7-15 overall, 9.5 games behind MISL Central Division leader Milwaukee and 1.5 games behind Kansas City in the quest for the sixth and final MISL playoff spot. The Steamers have 14 games remaining this season, including two road games that have been postponed at Monterrey, and two games against intrastate rival Kansas City.

The Steamers jumped to a 1-0 lead Thursday when Sibiya slammed home a rebound of a Butcher shot at 9 minutes, 25 seconds of the first quarter. Coria tied the game 1-1 on a power play tally off a restart at 13:21 of the first. Victor Quiroz gave the Fury a 2-1 lead just 44 seconds later on an unassisted goal. Butcher, who late in the first quarter narrowly missed tying the game with a blast off the crossbar, converted a restart goal from the top of the penalty area to tie the game 2-2 at 12:58 of the second. The goal was Butcher's 21st of the season.

Monterrey took a 3-2 lead at 9:44 of the third when Martinez ran down a loose ball and beat Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips with a quick, low shot. The game remained 3-2 until Monterrey's Oswaldo Medina notched an unassisted tally at 6:54 of the fourth to make it 4-2. Doran made it 4-3 at 7:36 of the fourth on a blast following a free kick. However, Monterrey's Lopez answered at 8:56 of the fourth and Coria added an insurance tally off Steamers sixth-attacker Sterling Wescott with a little more than two minutes left for the 6-3 final.

The Steamers' next game is Feb. 16 when they host the San Diego Sockers in a 1:05 p.m. Presidents' Day match at The Family Arena. The Steamers defeated the Sockers 6-2 Feb. 7 at The Family Arena and the teams have split two games this season.
