Sacramento Monarchs News Release
SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Aug. 7, 2009 - The Sacramento Monarchs announced today the organization has signed guard Whitney Boddie to a seven-day contract; per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. In order to sign Boddie, the Monarchs waived guard Chelsea Newton, who had surgery on Wednesday to remove loose cartilage pieces from her left knee and is projected to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks.
"Chelsea's injury will not allow her to finish the season," said Monarchs General Manager and Head Coach John Whisenant. "She is a great teammate and a defensive stopper that will be missed on the floor."
Boddie, the Monarchs second round (20th overall) 2009 WNBA Draft pick, played in both Monarchs preseason games and averaged 21.0 minutes, 2.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She was previously waived on June 4 of this year, prior to the start of the Monarchs 2009 regular season.
Newton was originally selected by Sacramento in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft and started every game in her rookie season, helping the Monarchs win the 2005 WNBA Championship. On November 15, 2005, she was selected by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Expansion Draft for the 2006 season. After one season with the Sky she returned to Sacramento through a trade deal effective for the 2007 season. In the 2009 season, Newton has played in 21 games and is averaging 15.3 minutes, 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per game. Through her five WNBA seasons she has totaled 142 games and is averaging 19.5 minutes, 5.1 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
