Sacramento Monarchs News Release

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - The Sacramento Monarchs today announced forward DeMya Walker suffered a right knee patella fracture. She will undergo surgery tomorrow and is expected to be out six months.

"This is a hard blow for DeMya, as hard as she worked at her rehabilitation during the offseason," said Monarchs General Manager John Whisenant. "It's also hard news for the franchise, but we can deal with it. This will be an opportunity for the other posts on our roster to step up and especially for the young ones to strut their stuff."

The injury occurred on April 27, 2008, while Walker was playing with her team, Nadezhda, located in Orenburg, Russia. An X-ray and evaluation conducted this morning at the UCD Sports Medicine Clinic by Dr. Richard Marder confirmed the injury.

Walker has played five seasons with the Monarchs after being selected by the franchise as the fifth overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Dispersal Draft. She started five games for the Monarchs in 2007 before being sidelined with a knee injury. Prior to her injury, she was averaging 21 minutes, 8.8 points, 5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.6 blocks per game.

On June 2, 2007 versus the Los Angeles Sparks, Walker suffered a patellar tendon tear to her right knee with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter at ARCO Arena. She conducted her rehabilitation in Sacramento during the 2007-08 offseason, where she fully recovered and was cleared by team doctors to play overseas.

Through eight WNBA seasons, Walker has played in 200 games and averaged 21.1 minutes, 8.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. Additionally, the 2005 WNBA All-Star selection was an integral part of the Monarchs 2005 WNBA Championship team.

Expect Great Basketball all summer at ARCO Arena! The Monarchs tip-off their 12th WNBA season at home against the San Antonio Silver Stars on May 17 at 7 p.m. PDT.
