Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs reach 10-game winning streak with win over Watertown

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs finished up a home stand on Saturday night against the Watertown Wizards and extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 12-2 win.

The DiamondDawgs jumped out to a quick start scoring in the first after Tyler Heck (Union) walked and stole a base and was knocked in by David Del Grande (Sacramento State) for a 1-0 lead. The Dawgs struck again in the second when Mark Stuckey (Marist) doubled and Jonathan Scott (Bryant) singled bringing in the second run of the game. The third inning brought one more run after Eric Helmrich (Marist) singled in Stuckey and the Dawgs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings.

Watertown Wizards got on the board in the top of the fifth when Dustin Exford (North Eastern Oklahoma A&M) hit a two-run homerun. The Wizards threatened for more with bases loaded but were unable to convert after Michaud struggled in the inning throwing two walks and hitting a batter.

The DiamondDawgs pushed over two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead after a single by Morrow and Stuckey and a sacrifice fly by Helmrich made it 4-2 and a ground out by Tyler Hall (Herkimer C.C) moved over another run for the 5-2 advantage

The Wizards had bases loaded in the top of the eighth as Aaron Casper struggled but a pass ball allowed the runner to go home and he was called out as catcher Jonathan Scott made the stop at the plate.

The Dawgs struck again in the eighth when they poured on the runs scoring seven runs in the inning and amassing a 12-2 lead. The inning saw a series of walks, singles, a double, triple, hit batters, a pass ball and a wild pitch.

Joe Michaud (Bryant) 4-1, 0.90 ERA picked up his fifth win going five innings and giving up two hits, two runs, five walks and two strikeouts. Raymond Morton (Norfolk State) entered the game in the top of the sixth and went two innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Nathan Harrell (Hind C.C.) made an appearance in the eighth inning to face one batter and got him to lineout and made way for Aaron Casper (Canisius) who pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit, a walk and a strikeout. Taylor Wright (Brown) finished up with an inning of work and picked up a strikeout.

Chris Cruz (Cornell) was 1 for 4 with a triple and run scored, David Del Grande (Sacramento State) went 1 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI, Jack Morrow (Young Harris) was 3 for 5 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, Mark Stuckey (Marist) went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored, Eric Helmrich (Marist) was 2 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and four RBI, Jonathan Scott (Bryant) was 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI and Joe Carcone (Bryant) went 1 for 4 with a double, run scored and two RBI.

Mike Peters (Alcorn State) 0-2, 9.00 ERA got the loss in five innings of work with seven hits, five runs, five walks, three strikeouts and two wild pitches. Drew Quinney ((Savannah State) came in for 2 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits, seven runs, a walk, hit a batter and struck out two. Anthony Magovney (Buffalo) worked 1/3 of an inning and had a walk, two hit batters and a strikeout.

Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) was 1 for 2 with a double and two walks and Dustin Exford (North Eastern Oklahoma A&M) hit a two run homerun and went 1 for 3 with two runs, a run scored and an RBI.

The DiamondDawgs begin a three game road trip before returning home on Thursday night against the Amsterdam Mohawks for a 7:05 game.
