Mobile's Simmons Signed By Wizards
December 27, 2002 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. (December 27, 2002) - Mobile Revelers forward Bobby Simmons has signed a contract with the Washington Wizards, the NBA team announced today, making him the second National Basketball Development League player to be "called-up" this week. The Atlanta Hawks signed Huntsville guard Mike Wilks on Tuesday.
Simmons is the 12th NBDL player to sign a NBA contract since the league began play in mid-November 2002, and the third player this year to get the call up from the NBA's Minor League. Devin Brown, currently a member of the Fayetteville Patriots, was signed by the San Antonio Spurs in early November and played in seven games before returning to Fayetteville later that month.
"We welcome the chance to have Bobby back with the Wizards organization," said Wizards General Manager Wes Unseld. "He is a talented player who can add some versatility to our ball club."
Simmons played in and started 14 games for Mobile this season. His 17.1 points per game led the Revelers in scoring and currently is second in the NBDL. A 33-point performance against Columbus Nov. 17 is tied for the third-best scoring output in the league and his 16 free throws made in that game is tied for NBDL single-game honors. He also averaged 5.2 rebounds per game.
The DePaul product played with the Wizards in 2001-02, averaging 3.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 30 games after being drafted in the second round (42nd overall). Simmons started three games in 2001-02 and was in training camp with Washington this season.
Simmons registered a career-high 15 points against New York on April. 16, 2002 and grabbed a season-high five rebounds on four occasions. He dished out a season-high four assists at New Jersey on April 9.
An early entry candidate for the 2001 NBA Draft, Simmons was the only player in DePaul history to record 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, 200 assists, and 100 three-point field goals. His final point total of 1,263 ranks 17th in school history.
Simmons was a member of the silver medal-winning USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men's Team in the summer of 2000. He was also a member of the silver medal-winning USA Basketball Men's Junior World Championship Team in 1999.
Simmons will be in uniform #21 Saturday when the Wizards host the Atlanta Hawks.
