Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Chris Cornelius, a sophomore at the University of Missouri, is headed to Newport for the 2018 season. The six-foot, 190-pound Tiger hails from St. Louis, Mo. and is a product of St. John Vianney High School.

Similar to his teammate and 2017 Gull Kameron Misner, Cornelius made an immediately made an impact upon stepping on campus. He became the first true freshman to start at shortstop in every game for Mizzou since 2008. In 55 games, he totaled 25 runs and 31 RBI, becoming the first freshman to tally over 30 RBI in a season for Missouri since 2010. Chris earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors following a four-hit performance that helped propel the Tigers past the University of South Carolina Gamecocks in Week 13. Cornelius finished the last 10 games of the 2017 season batting .351 with eight extra-base hits, homering in Mizzou's SEC tournament matchup against Texas A&M.

In his final high school season, Cornelius was ranked the number one overall shortstop in the state of Missouri by Perfect Game. He owns six school records at Vianney High School including total bases, average, runs, RBI, doubles, and hits. A .380 average and 21 RBI as a senior earned him 2016 Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention honors and a 2016 Rising Star Award Finalist. The Missouri native was also named First-Team All-MCC in 2014 and 2016.

This past summer Cornelius played for the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders in the Northwoods League. In 44 games, the sophomore garnered a .316 clip with 55 hits and 21 RBI. The Gulls are excited to have another outstanding Missouri Tiger on the roster for the 2018 season.
