Biloxi Shuckers News Release
KODAK, TN - The Biloxi Shuckers (38-44, 4-11 2nd Half) took an early lead but were topped 7-3 by the Tennessee Smokies (45-39, 8-7 2nd Half) on Thursday night at Smokies Stadium.
Andruw Monasterio doubled with two outs in the first and Garrett Mitchell drove in the Shuckers' shortstop with a single up the middle, making it 1-0 Biloxi in the top of the first. On the mound, LHP Brandon Knarr (L, 1-2) surrendered just two hits in his first three innings, holding the Shuckers' advantage at 1-0.
Biloxi had an opportunity to add on to their lead in the top of the third but were unable to convert. Joey Wiemer led off with a single and was cancelled out on a fielder's choice by Monasterio. Mitchell hit a bouncing infield single that slid under the glove of Jake Slaughter, moving both runners up to second and third with only one out. RHP Ryan Jensen coaxed a pair of groundouts from Biloxi, preventing a run from scoring.
Tennessee jumped into the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of solo home runs from Chase Strumpf and Alexander Canario. Monasterio replied with a solo blast of his own in the top of the fifth, his fifth of the year and second of the series, leveling the game at 2-2. The Smokies would score two in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to move in front 5-2.
In the top of the seventh, Wiemer worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Monasterio, his third hit of the night. Mitchell followed with a hustle double to center, moving Biloxi within a pair at 5-3 and putting the tying run at second. RHP Jeremiah Estrada (S,1) entered for LHP Dalton Stambaugh (W, 6-2) and struck out the next batter before forcing a groundout that ended the Shuckers scoring threat. Biloxi went 2-for-11 with men in scoring position on Thursday night.
The Shuckers and Smokies continue their six-game series on Friday night at Smokies Stadium. RHP Noah Zavolas (2-2, 8.18) takes the mound for Biloxi against Smokies' RHP Walker Powell (0-2, 3.38) for a 6:15 pm CT first pitch.
