San Antonio Scorpions News Release
Nana Meriwether, who was crowned as Miss USA in 2012, will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the brand new home of the Scorpions, Toyota Field on Saturday April 13th, Scorpions President and GM Howard Cornfield announced on Thursday.
Meriwether will take part in the opening ceremonies of the first home game for the Scorpions by giving a short speech prior to kick off before escorting Morgan Hartman to the center of the field for the ceremonial coin toss. She will then walk with Morgan who will score the first ever goal in Toyota Field. After pre-game ceremonies have concluded, Meriwether will mingle with guests and match attendees during the historic event.
Meriwether is an incredibly accomplished woman who was born in South Africa. Standing at six-feet tall, she grew up in Potomac, Maryland and is a two-time All-American volleyball player. She captained the UCLA volleyball team to the Final Four and set three NCAA records during that span. After graduating from UCLA with high honors and a degree in Political Science, she completed her pre-med studies at USC.
Her dedication to community service led her to co-found the Meriwether Foundation six years ago, which serves in several villages in five South African nations. The foundation has opened schools and clinics, started orphanages and initiated HIV programs among many other things.
"I am honored to be visiting Gordon Hartman, the owner of the San Antonio Scorpions, for the opening of their season and new stadium," said Meriwether. "As someone who has been involved in philanthropy and helping others since I was 6 years old through my family foundation, the Meriwether Foundation, in South Africa, I am honored to be a friend and partner in Gordon's unique vision to support Soccer For a Cause and Morgan's Wonderland, the special needs park. I also look forward to visiting and meeting the children at Morgan's Wonderland. I want to personally thank Howard Cornfield, the president of the Scorpions, for inviting me to San Antonio; he shares our joint vision to always help those less fortunate and I am honored to be in San Antonio to play a role in seeing that vision through."
Meriwether also has plans to visit with nearby Morgan's Wonderland to exemplify her support for Soccer for a Cause and the special needs community. Her attendance will only add on to the incredible opening of America's newest soccer specific stadium, Toyota Field.
