MISL Scores Big in Monterrey
December 3, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
(Westport, CT, December 3, 2003) - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) launched a new international era on Sunday, November 30, as the Monterrey Fury welcomed the Dallas Sidekicks for their first home game at the sparkling new Monterrey Arena.
A near-sellout throng of 14,776 fans â the largest crowd in the MISL this season to dateâ enjoyed an elaborate pregame ceremony commemorating the first sporting event at the 16,000-seat arena, and witnessed a thrilling contest as the Fury defeated Dallas 5-4 in overtime on a goal from Genoni Martinez. The crowd was the largest in the MISL since 15,558 fans attended a School Day Game in Dallas last March 22.
Completed in mid-November, Monterrey Arena is a world-class venue featuring state-of-the-art lighting, sound, and climate controls. These qualities along with more than 140 luxury boxes allow the Arena to offer superior fan amenities.
Among those in attendance was MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan, who offered a first hand account of the event. "It was electric," Ryan stated. "Since this franchise was established, there has been a whisper about its potential success. I do not think anyone expected to see so much so soon. For an expansion team to enjoy this type of accomplishment speaks volumes about the Monterrey community and the hard work performed by the Fury front office staff.
"The Major Indoor Soccer League anticipates continued success in Monterrey, and looks forward to an even stronger international presence over the coming years even as we continue our growth in the United States and perhaps Canada."
The MISL announced its expansion into Monterrey on July 14, becoming the first major professional sports league in the United States to expand into Mexico. Monterrey, the capital of the industrial state of Nuevo Leon, is the third-largest city in Mexico with a population of roughly three million, and is the nation's chief center of heavy industry.
The Monterrey Fury will next host the Kansas City Comets on Friday, December 5.
