GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Victor Nogueira, San Diego Sockers
Nogueira stopped 12 of 14 shots in leading the Sockers to a 10-2 win over the Monterrey Tigres at the San Diego Sports Arena on Oct. 29. The 45-year-old goalkeeper recorded the 453nd victory of his professional indoor career, yielding single goals in the first and third quarters, as the Sockers improved to 2-2. Nogueira, a native of Mozambique, is an eight-time Goalkeeper of the Year in the League, who now has 9,434 career saves. This is his second MISL Goalkeeper of the Week award for 2004-05. He also won on Oct. 11. Nogueira won the Goalkeeper of the Week honor five times last season, and was named the MISL Goalkeeper of the Month for December.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sean Bowers, San Diego Sockers
Bowers also played a key role in San Diego's 10-2 victory over the Monterrey Tigres at the San Diego Sports Arena on Oct. 29. The seven-time All-League selection and seven-time All-Star had two assists and four blocks against Monterrey. Bowers' four blocks were the most recorded by one player in a single game this season. The 36-year-old native of San Diego has been named the League's Defender of the Year on three occasions, most recently following the 2001-02 season. Bowers led the MISL with 93 blocks last season, and also added 14 goals and 16 assists in 33 games. He was honored as the MISL's Defensive Player of the Week three times in 2003-04 (Nov. 10, Dec. 15, Dec. 22) and was named the MISL Defensive Player of the Month for December.
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
P.J. Wakefield, Baltimore Blast
Wakefield had two goals and two assists in the Blast's 8-7 overtime win over St. Louis at the Savvis Center on Oct. 29. His score 1:32 into the extra period was the game-winner, as two-time defending MISL Champion Baltimore improved to 2-1 with its second consecutive victory. The 23-year-old forward currently leads the MISL in assists (five) and is second in points (seven). He's also tied for the team lead in blocks (three). The Baltimore native, who was the MISL's Rookie of the Year in 2002-2003, now has 48 goals and 24 assists in his career. The MISL Offensive Player of the Week honor is Wakefield's first in his three-year professional indoor soccer career.
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jorge Valle, Chicago Storm
Valle scored three goals to help rally the Storm to a 9-8 overtime win over the Milwaukee Wave at Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena on Oct. 29. The victory was the first in Chicago Storm history, and Valle's three goals were good for the first hat trick in club history, as the Storm improved to 1-1. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound Valle is a native of Mexico City, Mexico. Before joining the Storm, the 25-year-old forward played two seasons with Dorados Culiacan of the Mexican Second Division. Valle is a product of the highly-respected Atlas youth program and has appeared for the senior squad in the Mexican First Division. He is the first MISL Player of the Week winner for the Storm.
