MISL Announces Expanded 2004-05 Regular Season Schedule

(Westport, Conn., Sept. 15, 2004) – The Major Indoor Soccer League announced on Wednesday its expanded regular-season game schedule for the 2004-05 season. The League also revealed the divisional alignment, as well as the format for the 2005 MISL Championship Series.

Each MISL team will play an expanded 40-game (20 home/20 away) regular season schedule, a four-game increase over the 36-game slate in 2003-04. The majority of the League's 2004-05 regular season line-up will be played on the weekend, with 95 percent of games scheduled for Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The 2004-05 MISL regular season will run for 28 weeks, beginning on October 9 and concluding on April 24, with no games scheduled for the Christmas holiday weekend.

With the Chicago Storm entered for the 2004-05 campaign, and the Dallas Sidekicks currently inactive, the MISL's nine teams competing this season are again divided into three three-team divisions. The Eastern Division consists of the two-time defending MISL champion Baltimore Blast, the Cleveland Force and the Philadelphia KiXX. The Central Division consists of the Chicago Storm, the Milwaukee Wave and the St. Louis Steamers. The Western Division includes the Kansas City Comets, the Monterrey Fury and the San Diego Sockers. Each team will play opponents in their division eight times (4 home/4 away) and opponents outside of their division four times (2 home/2 away).

The 2005 MISL Championship Series is scheduled to begin the weekend of April 29. The Championship Series consists of six teams. Regular season division champions receive automatic bids to postseason play and earn the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeds as determined by their regular season records. The other postseason spots are allotted to the three teams with the next best regular season records, determining the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds. Home field advantage is awarded to the higher seeded team.

The Quarterfinal Round will be single elimination, kicking off on the weekend of April 29-May 1, 2005. The No. 3 seed will go against the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed will face No. 5. Seeds No. 1 and No. 2 will each receive a bye in the Quarterfinal Round and home field advantage in the Semifinal Round.

As approved by the MISL Management Committee, the Semifinal Round will now be a best-of-three series, with the lower seeded Quarterfinal winner meeting the No. 1 seed and the higher seeded Quarterfinal winner drawing the No. 2 seed. Semifinal Round action will take place on the weekends of May 6-8 (Games One and Two) and May 13-15 (Game Three, if necessary). The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will host Games One and Three.

The MISL Management Committee also modified the Championship Series Final, now pitting the winners of the Semifinal Round in a best-of-three series to be played on the weekends spanning from May 20 – May 29, 2005. The higher seed will earn home field advantage for Games One and Three, while the lower seed will retain home field advantage for Game Two. Should the Semifinal Round conclude during the weekend of May 6-8, the Championship Series Final would begin the weekend of May 13-15 and span to May 20-23, 2005.
