MISL All-Star Weekend a homecoming for local greats

(St. Louis, Feb. 6, 2004) -- Many of the most prominent names – and faces – in St. Louis' rich soccer history will be on display during the Feb. 29 MISL Legends Game at The Family Arena and throughout the three-day MISL All-Star Weekend, Feb. 27-29.

On Feb. 4, the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced the MISL Legends roster. The MISL Legends will take on the Steamers Legends in a 4 p.m. game immediately after the MISL All-Star Game, which kicks off at 1:05 p.m. at The Family Arena. Among those named to the MISL Legends roster are St. Louis natives Jamie Swanner, David Brcic, Mark Moser, and Tim Walters. Other St. Louis connections on the MISL Legends roster include Dan Donigan, the men's soccer head coach at Saint Louis University; Don Popovic, who coached the St. Louis Storm after gaining prominence as coach of the powerful New York Arrows MISL dynasty; and Branko Segota, who played for the Storm in the early 1990s.

The Steamers Legends roster, announced Jan. 20, will be coached by St. Louis natives Pat McBride, Al Trost, and Pete Sorber. Steamers Legends scheduled to appear include: Steve Pecher, Slobo Ilijevski, Tony Glavin, Ty Keough, Carl Rose, Don Ebert, Redmond Lane, Tony Bellinger, John Stremlau, Jeff Cacciatore, Jim Kavanaugh, Mark Frederickson, Denny Vaninger, Don Droege, John Hayes, and Eric Delabar. Twelve of the 16 Steamers Legends players listed above were born and raised in St. Louis.

National Soccer Hall of Famer – and St. Louis native – Harry Keough also will be featured in the weekend activities: the inaugural "Keough Awards" will be presented at the Feb. 28 Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence dinner/auction fund-raiser. The award will be presented to the outstanding St. Louis-based male and female professional or college soccer player each year. St. Louis native Dan Flynn, the secretary general of the U.S. Soccer Federation, will present the awards.
