Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

DUNEDIN, F.L. (June 16, 2008) - After a roster overhaul earlier in the day with 13 players in the Twins system changing uniforms, the new look of the Fort Myers Miracle never missed a beat, picking up right where the left off heading into the all-star break, with a 5-2 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday night. The Miracle scored their first win of the season at Knology Park behind a 13-hit attack and six solid innings of work by starter Matt Fox.

A two-out, solo home run by Brad Emaus in the bottom of the Jays first quickly gave the home team a 1-0 lead. The Miracle would respond a pair of innings later as Yangervis Solarte began the mini comeback with his infield single to short. After Solarte swiped second base, his first stolen bag of the year, Juan Portes tied it up two hitters later with his base hit to center. Portes would then come around on Whit Robbins' single to right, just beating the throw by Jays right fielder Adam Calderone, for a 2-1 Miracle lead.

Solarte, 2-for-4 on the night with three runs scored, was hit by a Kyle Ginley pitch to lead off the fifth. A bases-loaded single by Wilson Ramos brought in Solarte with the second of his three runs upping the Miracle advantage to two. Solarte struck again in the Miracle seventh with a lead-off triple to the gap in right as a wild pitch, uncorked by Dunedin reliever Celson Polanco, would plate Solarte for the third and final time.

Calderone's RBI-single in the eighth would slice the Miracle lead in half at 4-2, but an insurance run in the ninth gave the Miracle their last three-run lead. Edward Ovalle would smash a one-out double to left and later score on Robbins' second RBI-single of the night, this one also to right, for the final 5-2 advantage.

Fox got his second start of the season for the Miracle tossing six innings of work Monday night, allowing one run, three hits and fanned seven in the win. Anthony Slama picked up a strikeout in a perfect ninth for his 13th save of the year.

The middle game of the three-game set will take place on Tuesday night back at Knology Park beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle will hand the ball to RHP Cole Devries (5-5, 3.11) while the Jays counter with RHP Kenny Rodriguez (4-6, 3.76).
