FORT MYERS, FL (August 26th, 2010) - The stunning turn around for the Miracle in the past few weeks continued tonight in Palm Beach, as they took both games of a doubleheader against the Cardinals, and completed the three-game sweep. Fort Myers (30-29) has now won 10 of their last 12, and also knocked the Cardinals out of first-place in the FSL South. The Bradenton Marauders swept a doubleheader against St. Lucie to take over the top of the standings. The Miracle, who trailed as many as 8 games in the standings in the month of August, find themselves just 2 1/2 games back.
Fort Myers won game one 4-1, and the nightcap 7-3. They outscored the Cardinals 16-5 in the series, limiting Palm Beach to only 13 hits in the three games. The Miracle finished the season at Roger Dean Stadium with eight consecutive wins agains the Cardinals and Hammerheads combined, dating back to July 7th.
In game two, Fort Myers jumped out with three second inning runs against Cards' starter Arquimedes Nieto (8-6) - who took the loss. Yangervis Solarte hit an RBI double, and Chris Herrmann followed with a mammoth 2-run home run to right field. The early runs backed Kane Holbrooks (3-3) who tossed six innings for the win. He allowed only one run on four hits - striking out five. Holbrooks had his scoreless innings streak on the mound snapped at 19, when he gave up an RBI groundout to Richard Racobaldo in the fourth.
Up 3-1 in the sixth, the Miracle added four more runs against the Palm Beach bullpen. Jhonathan Goncalves doubled with the bases loaded to drive in the first two, with Drew Thompson following with a 2-RBI single.
Deibinson Romero had one of his best games of the season in game one, going 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, a triple, and 2 RBI's. He got the Miracle on the board in the first inning, tripling home Brian Dozier with two outs to put Fort Myers up 1-0. After the Cardinals scored their only run in the fifth to tie the game 1-1, Romero doubled to lead off the sixth inning, setting up a sac-fly RBI for Allan De San Miguel. Up 2-1, the Miracle added two insurance runs in the seventh, with a two-out RBI double by Deibinson capping off the inning.
Romero finished the series by going 6-for-8 with four walks, four runs scored and two RBI's.
Twins 2010 first-round pick Alex Wimmers made his second start for the Miracle, and tossed three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, and recorded four strikeouts. After loading the bases in the first, Wimmers got out of the jam and then sent down the final seven batters he faced in order. Miracle LHP Dan Osterbrock (7-8) came out of the bullpen to pitch the next two innings, giving up an RBI double to Domnit Bolivar in the fifth to tie the game. He earned the win though after the Miracle went ahead in the sixth inning.
Matt Williams pitched a scoreless sixth, and Dakota Watts pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to record his sixth save of the year.
Cardinals starter Deryk Hooker (3-3) lasted six innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits for the loss.
Fort Myers now returns home to Hammond Stadium to host the St. Lucie Mets for the final time in 2010. The series will begin on Friday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
