Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (June 10, 2014) - This was one of those nights where the baseball gods frowned upon the Stone Crabs. Nothing went right from the outset in Tuesday night's 10-0 loss to the Miracle, and the worst half inning of the season cost them a chance at gaining some ground in an uphill race in the South Division. Despite collecting just five hits, the Miracle capitalized on eight walks and sent 13 batters to the plate in the fifth inning. The loss sends the Stone Crabs further down in the standings, now officially eliminated from the season's first half with seven games remaining.

Trouble brewed early when Blake Snell fell behind in the bottom of the first. A one out infield single by Aderling Mejia allowed Stephen Wickens to hit a sinking line drive into right field. Julian Ridings, caught up in a sliding effort, could not slow the ball down, and it rolled behind him for an RBI triple and a 1-0 Miracle lead three batters in. Later on a 3-1 pitch, Adam Brett Walker's deep flyout to center brought in Wickens to make it 2-0 and set an early tone.

Tim Shibuya's second start for the Miracle could not have gone any better. After retiring the first seven hitters in a row, Josh Sale reached on an error at third by Niko Goodrum, who misplayed a slow grounder with one out in the third. Ridings then reached on a fielder's choice groundout at second before Tyler Goeddel flew out to right to retire the side. The Stone Crabs only other baserunner until the seventh was Leonardo Reginatto, who was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning but unable to advance past first.

Snell came out after walking the first two batters he faced in the fifth. Tyler Grimes then dropped down a bunt in front of the mound, and Stone Crabs reliever Luis Cabrera's throw to third to try and get the lead runner sailed all the way down the left field line to bring in two more runs. Two more walks loaded the bases for Wickens, who guided a high liner inside the left field foul pole for a grand slam and an 8-0 Miracle lead. Later in the frame, Stuart Turner's one-out RBI single with the bases still loaded scored Travis Harrison to make it 9-0. Jose Molina then got Grimes to hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 10-0 advantage before Jose Polanco popped out to retire the side.

Shibuya (4-2) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning until Patrick Leonard broke it up with a one-out single into left. In the eighth, the righthander came out of the game for B.J. Hermsen. With one out and Ridings at first after another fielder's choice grounder, Tyler Goeddel ripped a double to center field. The ball sailed over Grimes' head, but he started a relay to the second baseman Wickens, who threw out at Ridings at the plate for the second out. Alex Wimmers then closed it out by striking out the side in the ninth.
