DUNEDIN, F.L. (April 5, 2008) - A four-run sixth inning couldn't have come at a better time for Dunedin on Saturday night as the Blue Jays picked up a rain-shortened 5-1 win in seven innings over the Fort Myers Miracle at Knology Park. Heavy rain showers invaded the Florida State League contest with one out in the top of the Miracle seventh.
Miracle starting pitcher Deolis Guerra, acquired by the Twins in February in the Johan Santana trade, looked good in his five innings of work Saturday night. His only blemish was a two-out solo home run given up to the Jays Travis Snider in the first. Guerra finished his five frames allowing just the one run on two hits, fanning six.
A lead-off double off the bat of Brian Dinkelman led to the tying Miracle run in the fourth. After moving to third on a Rene Tosoni groundout, Danny Valencia picked up his fifth RBI in three nights bringing in Dinkelman with his ground ball to short.
The four-run Blue Jay sixth began with Snider's second hit of the night, a one-out single to center. After a Brian Dopirak walk put runners at first and second, Cory Patton would cash in with a RBI-double to left giving the Jays a 2-1 lead. The first of two flood gates opened on J.P. Arencibia's two-run double and Bradley Emaus' run-scoring single to right. After a one-out walk to Valencia in the Miracle seventh, the second and final flood gate of the night opened up thanks to Mother Nature.
The Miracle started off the night facing rehabbers B.J. Ryan and Armando Benitez on assignment from Toronto. Ryan, off of left elbow surgery last May, tossed the first inning allowing just one hit in his night of work. Benitez followed with a perfect three strikeout performance in the Miracle second.
An afternoon matinee awaits the Miracle and Blue Jays on Sunday in game two of the series from Knology Park. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. as LHP Tyler Robertson gets the nod for the Miracle against the Jays' RHP Kenny Rodriguez. Sunday's game can be heard on the Miracle Baseball radio network (1440 am WMYR and 1660am WCNZ) beginning with the pre-game show at 12:45p.m.
