Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- The Fort Myers Miracle (12-8) returned home with high hopes, facing a team that's just one game behind in the standings but 1-3 against Fort Myers in 2009. Unfortunately, a ninth-inning rally fell a little short as the bases were left loaded in a 2-1 defeat against the Charlotte Stone Crabs (12-8). The two teams are now tied at the top of the Florida State League South.
Chris Parmelee doubled to lead off the ninth, and after a sacrifice bunt, he scored from third on Steve Singleton's RBI single. The score was 2-1, then the Miracle loaded the bases with one out against relievers Rayner Oliveros and Paul Phillips, who struck out Ben Revere and Joe Benson to end the threat and the game.
The Miracle stranded one runner per inning from the second through the eighth before leaving 'em loaded in the ninth, for a total of ten men left on base. Fort Myers had its chances against the Crabs but just couldn't find the key hits necessary to score runs.
Darin Downs (4-0) has now won all four of his starts for the Stone Crabs. The former Cubs farmhand scattered six hits in six innings, with no runs, and two strikeouts. Paul Phillips got the last two outs in the ninth for his second save. Carlos Gutierrez was the hard-luck loser with five innings, two hits, one run, three walks, and four strikeouts in his final line. Spencer Steedley allowed a run in two innings, while Kyle Waldrop surrendered just one hit in a scoreless two frames.
Danny Lehmann was 2-for-2 with two walks and a double as he reached base in every plate appearance. Parmelee finished 2-for-4 with a double, Singleton was 2-for-4, and Joe Benson went 1-for-5 with a triple. Nevin Ashley was the only Stone Crab with a multihit day. The catcher was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The four-game series continues on Friday at Charlotte Sports Park. Deolis Guerra (2-1, 4.26) will face Charlotte's Alexander Cobb (0-2, 2.84) at 7:00 p.m.
