Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ - July 6, 2006 - Despite a great outing from Newark Bears starting pitcher Carlos Mirabal, the Bears were unable to win the rubber game of the three-game series against the Long Island Ducks, losing 4-0 Thursday evening at Citibank Park.

Mirabal (0-3), who was activated in June, took the loss for the Bears after allowing three runs on three hits in six innings pitched. However, after allowing two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to designated hitter Bucky Jacobsen, and a sacrifice-fly by third baseman Erick Almonte, followed by a solo home run by catcher Brad King in the bottom of the second, Mirabal retired the last 11 batters he faced to keep the Bears in the game. King finished the game 1-for-3 with the solo home run.

After being acquired by the Ducks earlier in the day, Bill Pulsipher (1-0) earned the victory for the Bears throwing seven scoreless innings allowing three hits, while striking out four. The three hits for the Bears came from shortstop Orlando Miller, and 2006 Atlantic League All-Stars, right-fielder Will Pennyfeather, and left-fielder Jose Herrera.

The Bears will travel to Bridgeport to complete the first half of the 2006 season against the Bridgeport Bluefish Friday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
