Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Alexandria, Minn - Minnesota Twin's great Gene Larkin, who delivered one of the top World Series moments in history when he hit a game-winning single scoring Dan Gladden in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series, is throwing out the first pitch for the Alexandria Blue Anchor home opener at 6:3pm on May 27th at K5nute Nelson Memorial Field in Alexandria, MN.
Larkin was a 20th round draft pick in 1984 and was the second alumnus out of Columbia University to play professionally after Lou Gehrig. Larkin said it has been a while since he connected with Newman and looking forward to seeing him.
"It will be fun seeing Al again," Larkin said. "When I heard he was managing the Blue Anchors I thought it was a great job for him with his ability and experience in developing players at every level. The players are fortunate to have him and they will love playing for him."
Larkin, who played seven seasons for the Minnesota Twins as a first baseman and outfielder, is also one of seven Minnesota Twins who played on both the 1987 and 1991 championship teams.
Who is one of the other seven you may ask?
That's right. Blue Anchor, skipper, Al Newman.
Newman, who will be starting his second year at the helm of the Blue Anchors, said he is looking forward to seeing his former teammate.
"It's going to be great to see him," Newman said. "He had a tireless work ethic and I owe him a lot. I got a ring (in 91) because of him."
Larkin, who is currently part-owner of Players Only baseball, will have a busy summer as head coach of the Edina Legion baseball team as well as running a summer developmental league for kids ages 7-13. Through their Minnesota Blizzard traveling teams, some of Larkin's former players including Mitch Larson will have a chance to play in front of Larkin in the near future.
"It will be great watching Mitch Larson* play with the Anchors soon," Larkin said. "He has been a part of Players Only for years and it is very satisfying see how much work he has put in over the years. The fans of the Blue Anchors will be entertained and will appreciate how he goes about their business. He is a great kid."
You can see Gene Larkin throw out the first pitch to Al Newman on May 27th at the Blue Anchors home opener at 6:35 against the Mankato MoonDogs.
*Larson on DL to begin the season.*
