Blaine, Minn. (Saturday, September 13th, 2014) -- Minnesota United got back to its winning ways Saturday night with a crucial 2-1 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, extending its home unbeaten streak to eleven games at National Sports Center Stadium. Christian Ramirez and Miguel Ibarra scored to give United the three points it needed return to the top of the NASL Combined Standings.
"I think we predicted Fort Lauderdale was going to come in and be confident and come at us," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "I'm happy that we handled the adversity well, I don't think we played as well as we could have in certain spots of the game. Very pleased with the guys' response, particularly after [the Strikers] scored, I thought that's when we really started to play quality soccer."
Minnesota dominated possession for the majority of the first half, but the Strikers broke the run of play with a surprising goal in the 31st minute. Pecka received the ball just outside the United penalty area and struck a volleyed shot past goalkeeper Matt VanOekel to give Fort Lauderdale the early lead.
United struck back after a foul gave Kevin Venegas a free kick opportunity from the right side of the pitch. Venegas curled the ball across the penalty area and found league-leading goal scorer Christian Ramirez, who deflected the ball into the back of the net to level the match in the 38th minute.
After halftime, Minnesota came out strong to continue the pressure on the Fort Lauderdale goal. Miguel Ibarra gave United the lead in the 54th minute with an impressive run at goal. The midfielder dribbled through three Strikers defenders and pulled the trigger from outside the box and put the ball perfectly in the back corner of the net with an incredible strike.
Fort Lauderdale began to put on heavy pressure as the half went on, putting more men forward while Minnesota kept bringing back more defenders. Despite the many chances, United was able to hold on to claim the victory, extending its home unbeaten streak to eleven games.
Minnesota goes on the road next week to take on the San Antonio Scorpions, who currently are on top of the Fall Season standings. United will return home on October 4th to face the Atlanta Silverbacks. Secure your seats today by calling 763.4SOCCER or visiting MNUnitedFC.com/tickets.
