(Alexandria, MN) The Minnesota Blizzard scored a 4-3 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead Jets Saturday night, December 11th, at Alexandria's Runestone Community Center for their second straight triumph. The win kept the Blizzard within three points of the lead, in the NAHL Western Division.
Minnesota never trailed in the contest, though Fargo-Moorhead rallied twice to tie. The only score of the opening canto came off the stick of Minnesota's leading point man, Ryan Hawkins (Eden Prairie, MN). He netted his 12th goal at 9:37, with assists coming from Forwards Sam Windsor (Plymouth, MN) and Andrew Olson (Alexandria, MN). Each team scored twice in the second period. Minnesota's second goal came on the power play, as Josh Frider (Moorhead, MN) lit the lamp at 4:46. Hawkins and Defenseman Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN) earned assists. Blizzard Captain Aaron Castle (Roseau, MN) snapped a 2-2 tie late in the second period with his fifth goal of the year, which came on a pretty assist from line mate Brian Baker (Brooklyn Park, MN). For insurance, the Blizzard upped the lead to 4-2 with under eight minutes to go, scoring with a two-man advantage. Tony Selvog (Warroad, MN) collected the goal, with Hawkins and Karl Larsen (Princeton, MN) assisting. The Jets scored a late goal, with a sixth attacker on the ice, to close out the scoring. Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN) stopped 27 of 30 Fargo-Moorhead shots, to earn his 13th win in 20 decisions between the pipes this season.
Not only is winter approaching on the calendar, but so is the second half: Of the Minnesota Blizzard regular season schedule, that is. The midpoint of the schedule will come later this week, after the two road games on the Blizzard slate. Thursday night, December 16th, Minnesota travels to North Dakota's Capital City, to face the Bismarck Bobcats, in a 7:00 start at the VFW Sports Center. Then, the Blizzard meet the Fargo-Moorhead Jets Friday night at 7:05, in Fargo's John Carlson Coliseum. The Blizzard will wrap up a stretch of four games in four days, with home contests versus Billings Saturday night, and Bismarck on Sunday. All remaining regular season Blizzard home games will be played at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria. Saturday's game begins at 7:00, while the Sunday contest begins at 5:00 PM.
