Minichiello: What Black History Month Means to Me

Black History Month to me is a celebration of our ancestors and their excellence. It is a reminder that the world would not be where it is today without their hard work, intellect, and innovation.

It is also an opportunity to teach and share stories of past and present successes and hardships of Black people, encouraging our youth to be proud of who they are and where they come from.

My inspiration growing up was Damon Edwards. I grew up playing for the Toronto Beaches, where Damon had played his Junior A. All I ever heard was stories about how fast and athletic he was, which is exactly how I wanted to be as a player.

I didn't look up to Damon for his athleticism, though. His visits to our practices taught me what it meant to be a professional. I admired his kindness and ability to feel comfortable in his own skin regardless of the situation. He treats everyone he encounters with respect.

Damon is my inspiration. I encourage young lacrosse players to follow examples like his.
