Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners are excited to announce, in conjunction with Withers Broadcasting, the creation of the newly formed Miners Radio Network. The network is composed of five Withers radio stations and affiliates and will allow thousands more fans in Southern Illinois and the surrounding areas to listen to the play-by-play for all 96 Miners games on the radio. Withers radio affiliate 97.7 The Bear will continue to be the team's flagship station.
"This is huge for our fans across the region who haven't been able to listen to Miners games at home," Miners Vice President Erik Haag said. "We've said since day one that we want to reach a fan base that includes all of Southern Illinois, from river to river and as far north as Mt. Vernon, and now we can give our fans the ability to follow the team more closely."
In addition to 97.7 The Bear, the four additional stations in the Miners Radio Network that will carry all 96 Miners regular season games in 2009 are KJXX-AM covering Cape Girardeau, WRXX-FM in the Centralia/Mt Vernon area, WEBQ-AM in Harrisburg and WRJJ-FM in Paducah.
"We're pleased to be able to help the Miners in their growth," said Russ Withers, owner of Withers Broadcasting. "This partnership works perfectly in our continued quest for local sports programming at Withers Broadcasting. We look forward to a long and mutually satisfying relationship."
Once again Miners broadcaster Scott Gierman will call the play-by-play for the Miners games.
"The people at Withers have been great to work with," Gierman said, "and I'm excited for another season with them."
Fans will have their first chance to listen to the Miners on their new radio affiliates this Saturday, May 9, when Southern Illinois begins its preseason schedule with a 7:05 p.m. game at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For the latest news and updates, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
