Miners Sweep the Beach Bums

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners are headed to the F'rontier League Championship Series for the first time in franchise history. The Miners swept the Traverse City Beach Bums on Saturday night. Miners starter Cody Hall pitched six innings and only gave up one run off five hits and struck out two batters.
The Miners scored first off Beach Bums starter Brooks Belter in the bottom of the first inning. After a lead off double by Alvaro Ramirez, Jake Kaase flew out to left field. Javier Herrera with one out hit a two run home run off Belter to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. Carlos Mendez added another run on a ground out to give Southern Illinois a 3-0 lead.
Traverse City scored a run off Hall in the top of the second inning but the Miners took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Jason Ganek, who was 3 for 4 on the evening, hit a one out double to score Javier Herrera who led off the inning with a base hit. Hall left the game after the sixth inning. The Miners chased Belter after three innings.
Traverse City scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning but Steven Grife struck out two batters with the bases loaded and gave up a single to Kyle Colligan, which scored two runs and were charged to Nick Cicio. Grife got Sean Gusrang to pop out to short stop to end the threat in the top of the eighth inning.
Brandon Cunniff struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning to earn his third post season save and give the Miners a 4-3 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums.
The Miners now will wait until the series between Gateway and Florence finishes to find out who they will play in the championship series. Game One begins on Wednesday night, with the Miners on the road. Game Three will be at Rent One Park on Saturday night at 7:05 pm.
