Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners could not slow down the offense of the Evansville Otters on Saturday night at Bosse Field, trailing throughout the game and dropping a 9-3 decision after a long rain delay and evening up the series at one game apiece.
After a ninety-minute rain delay, the Otters again scored in the first inning before any outs were recorded. Rolando Gomez walked against Dyllon Nuernberg to lead off, and on an infield single by Josh Allen and a throwing error was able to score from first base to make it 1-0. Allen ended up at third on the play, and an RBI groundout made the score 2-0.
A Chris Breen two-run homer to center field in the third inning off Nuernberg (6-4) doubled the deficit to 4-0 for the Miners before Southern Illinois got on the board in the top of the fourth. After Nolan Earley walked to extend his on-base streak to 25 games in a row and Alex De Leon singled, two batters later, Brandon Cummins singled into left-center to make it 4-1 Evansville, picking up his first professional RBI in the process. But the Otters would get that run back in the bottom half of the inning, and then score two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to lead 8-1 heading into the seventh inning.
The Miners would cut the deficit to 8-3 when Shane Kennedy homered to right down the line, a two-run shot and his third of the season. But the Otters would tack on another insurance run in the eighth for the final margin.
Craig Massey, Francisco Rosario and De Leon each had two hits in the contest for the Miners offensively, but Southern Illinois' pitching faltered in the game, with Evansville scoring runs in every inning but the second and eighth to force a rubber match on a long night of baseball.
The Miners will look to rebound in the rubber match on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will take the ball for the Miners against an Evansville starter still to be named.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
