Miners Storm Back to 2-0 Series Lead

Traverse City, MI - The Southern Illinois Miners stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to win the game 5-4 in 10 innings at Wuerfel Park. Miners designated hitter Ken Gregory hit a go ahead home run in the top of the tenth inning with one out to give the Miners their first lead of the game, 5-4. Miners starting pitcher Daniel Calhoun pitched five innings and gave up four runs off seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven in a no-decision.

The Beach Bums took an early 3-0 lead off Calhoun in the bottom of the first inning. Calhoun gave up four hits in the inning, the most he gave up in one inning through out the course of his outing. Traverse City added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out when Chase Burch hit a solo home run off Calhoun to give the Beach Bums a 4-0 lead.

The Miners answered right back as they scored in the top of the sixth inning off Beach Bums starter Jacob Clem. After a one out triple by Alvaro Ramirez, Jake Kaase hit a double to give the Miners their first run of the game. As they trailed 4-1, Javier Herrera hit a base hit to score Kaase to cut the Beach Bums lead to two runs, 4-2. After a base hit by Ken Gregory to move Herrera over to third base, Jason Ganek hit a sacrifice fly to score Herrera and bring the Miners within one run, 4-3.

The Beach Bums took a 4-3 lead into the top of the eighth inning with reliever Scott Mueller on the mound. After he allowed the first two Miners on base, he left the game for closer Matt Miller. Jason Ganek laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to second and third base with one out. With Chad Maddox due up, Cory Harrilchak pinch hit and hit an infield single to score the first runner to tie the game at 4-4.

With the game tied going into extra innings, the Beach Bums sent reliever Matt Miller out for a third inning in the top of the tenth inning. Miller retired Herrera on a ground out to record the first out. Then Ken Gregory came up and hit a go ahead home run to right field to give the Miners a 5-4 lead. Brandon Cunniff came in the bottom of the tenth inning and retired the side, striking out Sean Gusrang like he did in game one to give the Miners the victory and the 2-0 series lead.

Gabriel Shaw threw a third of an inning in the sixth for the Miners and gave up two hits and struck out one batter. Nick Cicio threw 1.2 innings and struck out three batters. Steven Grife pitched two innings, gave up one walk and struck out two innings. No Miners reliever gave up a run.

The Miners take a 2-0 series lead over the Traverse City Beach Bums. Steven Grife recorded the win and Brandon Cunniff received his second save of the post season. The Miners and Beach Bums will meet on Saturday night at Rent One Park. The Miners look for the series win as they send RHP Cody Hall to the mound against the Beach Bums RHP Brooks Belter. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
