MESA, ARIZONA âThe Mesa Miners split a doubleheader against the Japan Samurai Bears at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona. The three game series against Japan will be the last before Mesa takes their first road trip of the season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Miners jumped out in front in the first inning with a 3-run home run by Caleb Maher. It was Maher's league leading fourth home run of the year. The Miners got some insurance runs in the eighth inning with an RBI single by Cleatus Davidson, a bases loaded walk to Michael Done, and a bases loaded hit by pitch by Marcus Knight.
Japan scored two runs in the ninth off Mickey Coughlin to make the game 6-3, but closer Kelly Johnson came in to record his third straight save. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Miners jumped ahead in the first inning again by Caleb Maher, this time with a 2-run double. But the lead wouldn't hold up as Japan scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings to eventually win 5-3. Losing pitcher for the Miners was reliever Jon Uhl (1-1). Rentaro Seki (2-0) pitched a complete game (seven innings) allowing three runs on six hits.
The Miners hit the road for Chico to play the Outlaws for three games, and then return home on June 10 to play the Fullerton Flyers.
