
Miners rally to beat Japan 3-1

MESA, ARIZONA âFor the second straight game the Mesa Miners rallied and scored three runs in the eighth inning to pick up the win. The Miners spoiled the East Valley debut of the Japanese Samurai Bears by winning 3-1 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
The Samurai Bears got on the board first in the fourth inning with an error by second baseman Digz Edwards for a 1-0 lead. Starter Satoshi Morita (0-1) pitched 5.1 scoreless innings before the bullpen took over. The Miners finally scored a run to tie the game at 1-1 in the eighth inning with a RBI single by Matt Connolly. Julius Thames, who entered the game for Edwards, got Mesa some insurance runs with a 2 RBI single.
The Japan hitters struggled all night, only getting two base hits. Both hits were given up by starter Jason Navarro (0-1) who pitched six innings and gave up just the one unearned run. Winning pitcher for the Miners was reliever Manny Ayala (2-1) who pitched two scoreless innings giving up no hits. Kelly Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second straight save of the season.
The Miners and Samurai Bears will play a scheduled doubleheader tomorrow starting at 4:05 p.m. The scheduled starter for Mesa is Tim Kalita (0-0) and Takaaki Igarahi (0-1) for the Samurai Bears.
